The new Crafter – economical, reliable and connected

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has given the new Crafter its world premiere in Germany ahead of its arrival in the UK next year, and it’s better than ever.

Customers can choose from four base models, as well as three lengths and three heights – 69 derivatives in all.

It has a maximum payload of 5.5 metric tonnes, a larger maximum cargo volume of 18.4m3 and a maximum cargo space height of 2,196mm.

Panel van lengths are 5,986mm, 6,836mm and 7,391mm and heights are 2,355mm, 2,590mm and 2,798mm. On top of that are open variants as single- or double-cab versions. These can come with or without superstructures, such as pick-up,  van body or tipper.

The front-wheel-drive version offers a maximum cargo capacity of 18.4m3 and loading the cargo bay is easy thanks to the 1,311mm opening of the sliding door, a minimal sill height of 570mm on the front-wheel-drive versions and optional 270-degree opening of the rear doors. The new Crafter also uses airline-style anchor tracks on the sidewalls, partition wall, roof and floor to secure loads from all sides.

Thanks to electromechanical steering, the new Crafter provides a wide range of driver assistance systems, such as lane, park and trailer assist, which all improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

And to help fleet managers keep up to speed with their vehicles, the new Crafter has the integrated FMS Fleet Management interface that can be used with many widely used telematics systems. This makes it easy to integrate the new Crafter into existing fleets.

The 2.0 TDI engine is available with front-wheel drive at three different power output levels 102PS, 140PS and 177PS (BiTurbo). They are 15 per cent more fuel-efficient on average than previous Crafter 2.0-litre engines. The new Crafter also scores with its ruggedness and low wear, maintenance and repair costs, all of which have a positive effect on total cost of ownership over the vehicle’s life cycle.

From around mid-2017, the Crafter will also be available with a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Dr Eckhard Scholz, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “The new Crafter represents a fusion of product and customer focus. We developed this vehicle from the customer’s perspective.”
